On Monday 11 February 2013 the Diploma in Nature
Management students from Centurion Academy, Bellville, embarked on their first
camp for the year at Rondevlei Nature Reserve, oblivious to the adventures that
lay ahead.
The identification of 30 plant species, 20
bird species and evaluation of various soil profiles weren’t nearly as exciting
as the 3 hippopotami the students saw in the vlei. The students were of the lucky few who can
share in the scarce sight. Some of the
other activities included bat trapping at Zeekoeivlei and bird ringing. As part of giving back the students assisted
in alien clearing and even joining the community in fighting a fire.
These camps form part of the practical
component of the Diploma in Nature Management and give students firsthand
experience of what life is like in the field.
Centurion Academy and Prestige Academy
forms part of the same group CAPA.
