On
Friday, the 8th of February 2013, the first year CAPA (Centurion
Academy and Prestige Academy) students went on their first-year induction camp.
At
9am on Friday morning, students showed up at the Academy, ready to board the buses heading to a location unknown to them. Although a few of them had found
out where they were going, and had spread the word among their fellow
strangers, they remained excited and acted oblivious as to not give their game
away, which the SRC surely caught onto the hard way.
After
a long, winding ride, and an abrupt stopping of one bus for a certain young
gentleman to use the vast field alongside the road as a toilet, we arrived at
the SOS camp in Villiersdorp.
Students
were then herded into the Mountain-side hall and were split up into teams
headed with various alcoholic beverage names. Some of the persuasive students
used their skills of manipulation to get away with changing their groups, while
others quietly slipped into another group with their friends. Finally everyone
was divided (not so equally) into their respective groups, and were ready for
whatever the SRC had planned for them for the weekend.
They
then made up their team war-cries, took part in an obstacle course,
leopard-crawled through mud and went for a swim to cool off in the pool
available at the camp site. Later, they ate, watched the wonderful talent, that
is Larry Soffer (South Africa’s number one Mentalist), and painted their team
banners and their Academy Life t-shirts.
After
a day filled with action-packed activities, the SRC thought the first years
would be stoked to get a good night’s rest in, but this was evidently not the
case… I think I’ll leave it at that.
Day
two brought along with it heavy rainfall and the ‘boeresport’. Teams, like
soldiers in battle, fought their way through the rain and fatigue to rough it
out in the 3-legged race, dribbling, the blindfolded race, the fireman’s lift,
and the potato-sack relay. It was war,
of which team Amarula were the victors. Some intense arm-wrestling competitions
also took place, and Jaco was dubbed the Capa bull, the stronger of the first
years.
They
then, between meals, had the afternoon to rehearse dorm plays, which they
performed. Winners of the Academy Life t-shirt painting competition were chosen,
and karaoke, disco and stok-brood-braai’s
were available for the students to choose from, for their evening
entertainment.
On
Sunday, the fatigue-ridden, redder-than-usual first year students, boarded
their buses and returned home. New friends were made and a rad time was had by
all (well, most).
