On Monday, the 29th
of October 2012, the first year Photography and Viscom students hosted their
annual year-end exhibition at the Art.B Gallery at the Bellville Library.
While the guests stood,
waiting in anticipation for the doors to open, you could hear the easy-going mutter
of small-talk filling the room. Conversations revolved around everyone’s
expectations for the evening, and the obvious lack thereof. Finally, the doors
were pulled back, allowing for these eager guests to stream in, and become
better acquainted with their surroundings.
Upon entering the gallery,
the guests were quickly distracted by the wide variety of mouth-watering
canapés and wines on offer for them to enjoy, while they made their way through
the exhibition. Some of the attendees were so mesmerised by the artistically
decorated walls, that it was difficult for Simon Doveton to get their attention
as he attempted to gather everyone together to formally welcome all the guests,
and to properly introduce the guest speaker of the evening, Johan Wilke.
After an inspiring speech, the
guests were given the freedom to view the gallery in all its splendour. Each
Photography and Viscom student was allowed to showcase four of their best
pieces, each with its own theme. It’s safe to say the talent coming from this
group of young individuals is nothing short of exceptional.
At the end of the
exhibition, five of the best photographs were selected and only one will be
chosen for an award which will be issued to its creator at the PrestigeAcademy’s annual prize giving on the 12th of December 2012. Big
congratulations to Stefan Maritz, Loren Carter, Krishna van Schalkwyk, Nicolene
Scheepers and Ashleigh Swartz, for being selected as the five students with the
best photographs at the exhibition.
All in all, this event was a
great success, enjoyed by all who attended. We look forward to seeing what
these young, talented individuals have in store for us next.
