At the early morning sunrise, wide-eyed VisCom students start to line at the tuck shop, not buying some sweet delight, oh no, but their seventh coffee (5 sugars and a teaspoon of milk- just the way we like it!) of the morning. Yes reader, your assumptions are correct, we do not sleep, we VisCom.
The day starts off with nearly 20 students sprinting up the stairs, projects in hand, taking our first breath when we (finally) reach Dr Hugo’s lecture room. These are our thinking periods. In Contextual InfoDesign and Research, we determine how pictures can give messages to the world, and we research you, the consumer, to make sure that the message you’ve received, is the right one. From there we take a brisk walk to our Design Concepts class, which is like graphic design on steroids. We take a design, analyse the living daylights out of it, and then- BAM, we create our own. From packaging to front pages, out-of-the-box-thinking becomes second nature.
By now break time feels like paradise as VisCom huddles, out of breath, around some Chocksnax and ‘slap’ chips. But that’s not where it ends, there’s still Photography lectures to get to…

We grab our cameras (and handbooks) and head to Mr Blom’s lecture. After a period or two of theory, the class scatters. Those who come with models and makeup, go to the studio where lights and backdrops invite them into an endless world of picture-possibilities. Others approach the computer room to edit (and brag about) their most recent photo shoot, and last but not least, those with nothing else to do, jump into their cars and go on an excursion to various interesting (sometimes extreme) locations to take pictures capturing a particular theme.
VisCom, in short, is an overall “learn-something-new-every-day” design and photography degree course, and at the end of every day you are amazed with what you have accomplished.
