An actual dog at DARG. What a champ! |
On
Wednesday the 29th
of August 2012, the SRC went to
DARG in
Hout Bay. The mission was to drop off
the cat and dog food
donated by the Prestige Academy students, and to spend a
little time with some
fury friends.
DARG is a
non-profitable
organisation which relies on its community for support. All the people that run
DARG have other jobs, but
do this as a passion. At
DARG they
don’t believe in
killing any of the animals that walk (well, in their case, limp) through their
doors, as
they believe in giving second chances and nursing the strays back to
health. They supply the animals with all the
required shots and diets they need
to ensure a speedy recovery. They also train the dogs properly, so that when
you
adopt them, they are familiar with commands from their owner.
Right, now that you have a bit of
background on the matter,
this is the story of our day at DARG. We departed from the
Academy,
food in hand and
ready for some feline fun! After a long (but pleasant)
drive
up the coast, we arrived at a small holding and were greeted by the sound of
barking hounds. There, we met the ladies in charge and
a three-legged pup named
Chance.
We then took a tour through the
kennels and got acquainted with all the dogs. There were all kinds of canines,
from poodles to pit bulls; there was no shortage of variation in this genetic
pool of pooches. From there we went to the cat sanctuary. If I was a cat, this
would be the most epic batch-pad ever. From the moment you entered the enclosing,
to the moment you left, the cats flirted and crawled and clawed their way into
our hearts.
The day also brought about some
amusement. Not only did we witness a testosterone induced cat fight (with
actual cats), but my head happened to be perfectly positioned for a bird to
fire a bowl movement at it. While I saw it fitting to make a “the sky is
falling” joke, I was duly notified of what had actually happened and took no
time in cleaning up the shenanigans that had engulfed my newly washed hair.
After saying goodbye to
all our
new friends, we herded ourselves into our cars and hit the road back to
Prestige Academy. This was a
truly heart-warming initiative, and we
look
forward to going back with some more donations in the
near future.
If you are interested in donating your time or money in this cause to animals,
or would like to adopt one, visit the
