The Potjiekos Competition

On the 14th of March our task was to plan and execute the annual Potjiekos competition. After weeks of gathering teams and encouraging everyone to attend, all ten spots were filled and we were ready to get cooking.

As the teams arrived excited and eager, I noticed the effort that went into the outfits and appearance of the teams and table displays. Team spirit and enthusiasm, from both participants and spectators, was extraordinary throughout the event. We had some dressed formally in black lace and pearls, and some even wearing garbage bags, regardless, everyone was dressed up.

As the DJ arrived the college turned into something we never thought was possible; a mini night club! Yes, this is true! There were some who, in true Afrikaans fashion, opened up their own “sokki” dance floor, and then there was the dubstep, which got everyone jamming in front of the academy’s doors. Some even forgot that they had entered into a Potjiekos competition and completely forgot about their potjies. After a couple of reminders, all returned to their stations, and the potjies were back on track by the time the judges arrived.

Everyone was on their toes and convinced that their potjie was the winner, or that they had the ultimate table display. Once judging had finally begun, potjies were tasted, and the winners were announced. The overall winners were secretarial 2, tourism 2 and events 2…It looks like the second years took this year’s Potjiekos competition by storm and left big shoes for next year’s second year students to fill.

After a night of partying, chatting and karaoke-ing, it was time to wrap up the event. While some couldn’t pull themselves away from the “dancefloor” others assisted in carrying braai drums and tables away. After all the cleaning and packing away was done, you would have never said that there was a massive party there. Everyone left with big smiles, amped to continue the party elsewhere.
