The First Year Braai: BoereSport, Boerewors and More!

On the 3rd of February 2012, the SRC were delegated the task to plan and host the annual first year braai.

It was so hot that there was speculation as to whether the students were going to be the ones cooking from the sun’s fiery rays, or the meat on the braai. However, we pressed on forward in the hope that we would find a way to keep the students comfortable and cool.

Which we did! As coincidence would have it, there was a water slide company that had set up their apparatus for a nearby school for its fun day; on the same field we were hosting the braai. Needless to say, we were quick to ask them to leave their apparatus running for the students to remain cool throughout the event. Luckily, they obliged, at a price, of course.

At the end of the college day, the students made their way up to the Vredelust field, where the braai was waiting for them. Speakers blasted the latest tracks, a cute, retro ice-cream truck supplied the students with soft serves, and the smell of succulent boerewors was in the air. Lecturers stood by (half of them blocking their ears from our generation’s so-called ‘music’), while the “boeresport” commenced. Due to the extreme heat, most of the students ditched having to pull a thread through a needle (without touching the needle), for some much needed cooling-down on the giant water slide. Some of the SRC shortly followed this trend, while others were forced to.

After bellies were filled, newly-straightened hair was wet, and all had witnessed Mr Mullins dive head-first from the top of the giant water slide, performing that which resembled a belly flop, it was time for the students, each a slightly berry-red version of themselves, to make their way home.

There were, however, a few strays that were determined to stay until the last of the equipment was packed away, and the last piece of rubbish was picked up, but this, and more contributed to an event which was successful and stacks of fun for all who participated.
