I would describe a typical day in the life of an IT student, as a day filled with both theory and practical learning. We usually cover our theoretical work first and then do practical labs, which makes it easier to learn how to apply theory in practice. Once we’ve learned something new, our lecturer gives us a chance to help one another to get to grips with the practical side. This is great as it we have to deal with real problems and find solutions using troubleshooting.
The lecturer interacts with us and always allows us to ask questions. I enjoy the practical aspect of the course and particularly helping other students who struggle with certain things. Once I’ve done my own practical work, I usually help other students in the class if they are not sure of finding the right solution. I usually end up repeating the practical work several times and in this way get more practice and do more troubleshooting than anybody else. This in turn helps me to achieve great marks for the practical exams. After we’ve done the practical work, the lecturer reviews everything to check that we all know what is necessary and can actually do the work. It’s a pleasure to learn and help others at the same time.
What is great about this course is that we do one subject at a time, as the IT industry is like a story book; one step follows another. We have really learnt a lot so far; in the first year from building and troubleshooting computers, wireless networks, Cisco Routers, Project Management and many more continuing to the second year learning to become a MCITP (Microsoft Certified IT Professional).
