28 September 2013

Finally...the day has come that Prestige and Centurion Academy make history by initiating their first ever soccer team.
Skilled and diverse students have signed up for the team whether for friendly competition, to get fit or to just have straight-up fun. The first practice was held on Thursday 19 September 2013, in the most unforgiving Cape Town weather; to say we got wet is an understatement! But nevertheless, we pushed through the rain and cold and trained for two straight hours. Some have not used certain muscles, or inhaled that much oxygen for months now, or ever, but there is definitely potential. On Monday 23 September 2013, our 2nd official practice took place, and with much gratitude to Andre Lee Adams from Centurion Academy (2nd year Sport Management student) for organizing the team two coaches, namely coaches, Zain  and Mashinga,  to prepare us for the upcoming tournament in the short time we have. Much thanks to them!
The tournament we are preparing for will be held at UWC on 11 October 2013; it’s a 25 minute-a-side game. Each team will be playing at least three matches, with the best top two from each group playing in the knockout stages. The tournament starts at 09:00am. Anyone is welcome to come and support.
For more information, please contact Mr. Jacques van Heerden at jacquesv@prestigeacademy.co.za or Grant Vermeulen, grantvermeulen@yahoo.com
Please keep a look out for the pre-tournament statistics on the players who will be competing.

Friends, it is my pleasure to be able to say a massive:
WELCOME TO THE SRC TEAM 2014 (happy dance)!
When I look around at you guys, (in my head, because I'm not looking at you as I type this) I see greatness, and a team full of the potential to excel at anything we put our minds (and guns) to. Each of you have a specific quality/ies that adds to the team, which forms part of the body of Prestige Academy and Centurion Academy.  “The eye cannot hear without the ear, and a hand cannot move without the arm,” because each part has a specific function. Just as that analogy is used, it applies to us as a team as well, when we’re apart, we are individuals (who are all awesome by the way), but together we are going to be a strong team that nothing can hinder us. C'mon somebody!

1st yr Nature Management’s road trip to the Two Oceans Aquarium

On Friday, 6 September 2013 the 1st year Diploma in Nature Management students embarked on a trip to the Two Oceans Aquarium.
The students were given practical assignment sheets to complete during their day at the Aquarium.
After the initial tour through the aquarium they received an informative talk by an educational marine biologist and were shown in-depth the inner and outer workings of marine organisms under a presentation microscope.
This trip gave the students the opportunity to correlate and connect their classroom theoretical knowledge to the living environment regarding animal anatomy and marine ecology.
All seemed embraced by the beauty and relevance of this integral part of our natural environment.

All Around the World

On Friday, the 16th of August 2013, the SRC hosted an “All Around the World” party at Cantina Tequila.

Doors opened at 7pm and it seemed that not even the gale-force winds and side-ways rain, could stop the Prestige Academy students and their friends from enjoying the night out.

People from all over the… Cape Peninsula, came dressed in what resembled the inhabitants of different countries, all in search of Wally, party music and great company. Although only a lucky-three found Wally, everyone else found what they were looking for at our party this past Friday.

We met Texas cowgirls, Roman gentlemen, Venetian Sailors, Greek beauties and Moroccan belly-dancing extraordinaires.  We were foreigners in our own country- “legal aliens” some would say, but we were there to party, and party we did.

It was a night to remember, and for those who don’t, here are some pictures…

Women's Day: Splash of Colour!

On Wednesday, 7 August 2013, Prestige Academy’s first year Event Management Students, under the direction of Mr. CE Mullins, hosted their annual women’s evening at Bellville Civic Centre.

This forms part of a practical component of the subject Events Practice-1. The students catered for 190 women and served canapĂ©s, dessert and drinks to celebrate Women. Students had to co-ordinate and decorate their selected tables according to the theme namely'; Splash of Colour.

The much-anticipated Charmaine Sparrow, from the Laughter Company SA, provided the evening with ample laughter, which was appreciated by all who attended.

Jan-Hendrik Fourie then graced the ladies with his presence, by performing well-known songs from Adele and Frank Sinatra, with great talent and poise.

The students donated a section of the proceeds from the evening, to safe -house Huis Jabes, in aid of the victims of women and child abuse. The other section of proceeds were donated to the Prestige Academy bursary fund for disadvantaged students.

This event was a tremendous success and, once again, our students left us speechless!

Chords for Cause

On Friday the 26th of July 2013, Prestige Academy’s 2nd year Event Management students hosted their first ever Chords for Cause Battle of the Bands at Bellville High School.

The night was headlined by  Skelmbosch,  a hard rock band from Stellenbosch, and was MC’d by the ever-so-rock ‘n roll Emile van Heerden.

The competition was tough as Sunset Sweat Shop, Feel Good Johnny, The Queenshead, Geheime Skaduwee, Last Reason, Awewolfies, After Dark and Elevated Motion battled it out to win the awesome prizes sponsored by Platinum Studios, Duisend Liggies Produksies and R&G Photography.

Our Panel of judges which consisted of Gerhard Grobler of Platinum Studios, Shaun Tait, Derick Lennox of Duisend Liggies Produksies, Estelle Gallowitz- a director and head of marketing at Prestige Academy, Tarryn Lamb of Blackbyrd and Eugene Joubert, decided that Awewolfie was the band that could not be beaten, and the crowd definitely agreed. They played a mix of old school rock n roll covers that left the audience wanting more! After Dark, and Elevated Motion, followed closely in 2nd and 3rd place, respectfully.

The turn-out for this event was extremely impressive for a first-of-it’s-kind event at Prestige Academy, and the response from the crowd to the music was truly electric. Food was devoured, An official Jack Parrow ring was raffled off and funds were raised in aid of the fight against women and child abuse.

Overall, this event was a huge success and we look forward to next year’s Battle of the Bands.

Phokoje Wildreservaat
